The Research Group Integrated Vehicle Safety (IVS) develops solutions for preventing human fatalities and severe injuries caused by vehicle accidents. To realize this, IVS ensures functional safety of vehicles by implementation of cooperative automated driving through real-time integrated model-based control solutions of TNO that are robust and reliable in all real-life scenarios.

IVS is known for its integral approach in vehicle control software engineering, that combines several fields of technology such as, among others, vehicle dynamics estimation & control, environmental perception & situational awareness, sensor fusion, V2X communication and human behaviour modelling. This approach allows us to provide holistic solutions for primarily automotive OEMs and TIERs all over the world.

IVS focuses specifically on cooperative vehicle automation using real-time control platforms, in-vehicle sensors, and wireless communication between vehicles and between vehicles and roadside systems. The level of vehicle automation and, more importantly, autonomy will increase rapidly in the next 10 years. As a consequence, future vehicles will not be able to rely on their drivers to mitigate traffic hazards, technological problems, or other factors that may affect their safety. That is, future vehicles will have to be designed to be both fault tolerant and operationally safe.
